Robin Hood of the Comics

Drawn by the World's Greatest Comic Artists

1930s

The Golden Age of comic strips.  Robin Hood stars in Mickey Mouse.  Comic books proper only started with 1938's Action Comics.

1940s

The art is crude and the Robin Hood styles are all over the place.  Odd, when the 1938 smash hit The Adventures of Robin Hood starring Errol Flynn was still on everyone's mind.  Love those fedora-style hats.

1950s

The Golden Age of Robin Hood kicked off with the 1952 Disney movie.  Then came the incredibly popular TV show with Richard Greene, The Adventures of Robin Hood.  Suddenly the guy in green was everywhere, in his own books and as a guest star.

Still a lot of Errol Flynn influence here, with a thin mustache and goatee.  In some pictures he appears to be barelegged, but that's probably a colorist's error.

1960s

Robin Hood looks like everyone else in the early '60s, a non-threatening guy with short hair and no beard. Even Sinbad the Sailor went beardless in movies and comics.

1970s

Not a lot of Robin Hood, but he pops up now and then as comics tried to move away from superheroes and branch out into other genres.  Robin Hood braces Dracula at Marvel, and pairs with The Three Musketeers at DC.  He makes a great guest star.  Anyone with their own comic sooner or later has a Robin Hood adventure.

1990s

Robin's getting younger.  Usually long-haired, no beard.  Often he looks like Michael Praed from Robin of Sherwood.  Sometimes Scottish.

2010s

Lots of hoods, not many hats.  Lots of brooding intensity, as if Robin were a teenage vampire.  The art is improving tremendously.  Young artists today are equal to Renaissance masters.
